Prevention of HPV infection

Preventing papillomavirus infection is possible with:

1

EDUCATION

A responsible sex life: condoms can help protect you against HPV.

Healthy lifestyle:

  • A balanced diet
  • Avoiding smoking
  • Frequent exercise

2

SCREENING

Annual gynaecological check-ups: sexually active women in the general population should be screened from age 30.

3

VACCINATION

Primary prevention begins with vaccinating girls aged 9 to 14 against HPV before they become sexually active.

Vaccines do not treat HPV infection or associated diseases such as cancer, and they are not a substitute for cervical cancer screening.
